HAGSTRAND, Jon


The Verde Independent, Cottonwood, AZ December 08, 2006 Jon Hagstrand died Dec. 2, 2006, of lung cancer at the age of 67. Born June 16, 1939, to Eric and Grace Hagstrand in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He spent his formative years in Janesville, Wis., before moving with his parents to California in 1949. Jon graduated high school in 1957. In 1959 he received his AA degree from Mt. San Antonio in Pomona, Calif., and in 1961 received his BA degree from Long Beach College, Long Beach, Calif. In 1963 Jon graduated with honors in Sociology from San Jose State College, California, where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Delta, National Sociology Honor Society. Jon spent two years in the army at Fort Campbell, Ky., where he was honored soldier of the month on three separate occasions. For 17 years he worked for Santa Clara County as a juvenile probation officer. He and his wife of 32 years, Janet, moved to the Verde Valley in 1979. In the valley he is best known as Mr. Goodwill; he retired as the Operational Director for both Sedona and Cottonwood Goodwill stores where he was employed for 14 years. Jon's happiest times were spent with his wife, roaming the Arizona backcountry, collecting of antiques and war memorabilia. His wife Janet and five children survive Jon; Jennifer Summers of Clarkdale, Jeff Christian of Tucson, Jamie Christian of Fremont, Calif., Christopher Chaney of Arroyo Grande, Calif., and Jodi Christian of Santa Rosa, Calif.
