Injuries Fatal to Local Man
The Rev. D. F. O’Sullivan, pastor of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church conducted funeral services at 2 p.n. Monday of this week at the Wickenburg Funeral Home for Anthony (Tony) Vukovich, whose untimely death from injuries received in an automobile accident came as a shock to his many friends here.
The American Legion also participated in the final rites and the body was sent to Chicago, Mr. Vukovich’s former home.
The accident in which Vukovich was injured occurred at 3 a.m. May 8 on the Phoenix Highway one-tenth of a mile west of Brownie’s Café at the edge of Circle City. He was driving towards Wickenburg when his car struck a double – decked cattle truck, also going west with a load of cattle for the Harmon Farms in Aguila.
Mr. Vukovich was brought to the hospital here and them, when his injuries proved more serious than at first believed, he was transferred last Friday to Good Samaritan Hospital where he passed away latter that same day.
Mr. Vukovich was born in Chicago March 23, 1912, and spent the greater part of his life in that area before moving to Arizona and to Wickenburg in 1951. He worked at various occupations in Chicago. For two years before coming west was in the Research Department of the Universal Oil Products Co.
He served 39 months as a sergeant in the Medical Corps during World War II.
Arriving in Wickenburg in 1951 he bought the Desert Rest Motel and a few years later established Wickenburg Realty. He was active in the affairs of the Arizona Association of Realtors and served on the board of directors of that organization. A few years ago he headed a committee which rendered a committee which assistance to the Town of Wickenburg when it annexed considerable property.
He was a member of the Wickenburg Rotary Club, Elks Lodge, Round Up Club and Country Club.
He is survived by a son Scott, a student at Arizona State College, Flagstaff, and one brother, Michael, Chicago.
The accident which claimed the life of the Wickenburg man was the fourth highway fatality of the year in the Wickenburg highway patrol area.
