CATE, Roland W.

Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona December 16, 1965 R. W. Cates Services Saturday The passing of Roland W. Cate on December 8 following a brief illness took from this community a man whose intense intrest in the history of Arizona and of Wickenburg has led to his recent selection as Chairman of the important Historical Committee of the Roundup Club. He was, at the time of his death, starting to classify much of the material of historical significance which has been accumulating in recent years in the files of that committee. Funeral services for Mr Cate were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wickenburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Gerrard, Rector of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, officiating. Cremation followed in Phoenix. Mr. Cate, whose death occurred in Community Hospital to which he had been admitted the afternoon before, was born 67 years ago in Wakefield, Mass. He moved to California when five years of age. He was, for a period of 32 years, in an administrative position with the Los Angles Public School System, retiring in 1954 and moving to Wickenburg. Here he was a real estate broker with the Pollman Agency on Frontier Street. . Indicative of his interest in the early history of Arizona was Mr. Cate’s research into the post offices of territorial Arizona, resulting in his preparing and having published an unusually interesting map showing all of those post offices in existence prior to the admission of Arizona into the Union in 1912. In addition to his interest in history Mr Cate was a widely known stamp collector and owned a collection considered one of the rarest of its kind in the world. Only last year he was named to the Arizona Hall of Fame of Philately, one of only 18 persons to be awarded this honor. He was also a life member of the Phoenix Philatelic Association. Mr Cate’s local affiliations included membership in the Rotary Club, the Elks Lodge and the Duplicate Bridge Club. He was a veteran of World War I. Surviving are the widow Nellie Weston Cate, a brother Crawford Cate, Beverly Hills, Calif., and a sister Mrs Raymond Elliott, Huntington Beach, Calif.
