The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ April 22, 2011 Melvin Best, 76, died April 18, 2011 in Springerville. He had been a resident of Springerville for 30 years. He was born Oct. 22, 1934, in Joplin, Mo., the son of Melvin Earl and Nadine Stapleton Best. Melvin served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a miner and worked mostly in New Mexico and Arizona. He enjoyed gardening and loved living in the mountains. Melvin was always there to help anyone in need. He is survived by his best friend and caregiver, Lisa Slaysman; one son and two daughters, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers. Lisa is grateful for the care provided by Hospice Compassus. Burnham Mortuary of Eagar handled arrangements.
