James Earl Walker
Longtime Bisbee resident, James (Jim) Earl Walker 75, died as a result of leukemia March 27, 2011. He was born Aug. 8, 1935, in Garvin, Okla.
The Walkers moved to Bisbee in 1940 when James was 4 years of age. He graduated from Bisbee High School in 1954 and began work at Phelps Dodge/Freeport McMoRan in 1955 where he worked as a power plant and underground operations foreman and Master Machinist until his retirement after 42 years.
James loved shooting, hunting and spending time at his cabin in Alpine with his family. He enjoyed helping people, brewing beer, working with his hands, and serving in his church. He was known for his positive attitude, practical jokes and great sense of humor.
James was recognized for his role in dismantling the Boras Mine head frame in Bisbee for reconstruction at the Arizona State Mining and Mineral Museum in Phoenix. He was instrumental in designing covers for machines with moving parts to bring them into OSHA compliance.
James is survived by his mother, Mary Frances Walker, 97 years of age; wife Mary Alice Walker of 55 years, three children: Dawn Walker-Garner, Craig Walker, Barry Walker and their families to include six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held to celebrate his life in Bisbee at the Warren Community Church Saturday, April 2, with Pastor Warren Griffin officiating.
