Lola Katherine Lester, 71, died April 27, 2011, at The Peaks in Flagstaff. She was born Sept. 1, 1939, at the Ganado Mission Hospital in Ganado, to John Cowboy (Hosteen Akalil) and Rose "Ahidibah" Spencer.
She attended school in Greasewood Springs Mennonite Mission, Holbrook Seventh Day Adventist and graduated high school from Albuquerque Indian School in the late 1950s.
She worked as a dormitory attendant for the Bureau of Indian Affairs school system in Magdalena, N.M., and in Holbrook. Later, she worked as a field nurse and social worker for the Indian Health Services in Keams Canyon. She was a very kind and generous lady. She worked hard her whole life raising her children, then in 2004, she took on raising four of 23 grandchildren, who she loved very dearly.
Mrs. Lester is survived by seven children, Tonita (Michael) Tsosie of Indian Wells, Vincent (Sophinia) John of Klagetoh, Calvin M. Spencer of Las Vegas, Ronald (Sherrie) Lester of Indian Wells, and Jerome Lester Jr., Corina Lester and Emery Lester, all of Greasewood Springs; her husband, Jerome Lester Sr., of Indian Wells; brother Leo (Loretta) Spencer Sr. of Greasewood Springs; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and clan relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John Cowboy and Rose Ahidibah Spencer; daughter Dorina Lester; three sisters, Lena Elk, Lucy Spencer and Betty Spencer; and 13 brothers, Wilbur Spencer, Horace Spencer, Johnson Spencer, Peterson J. Spencer, Lee Spencer, Michael R. Spencer, Woodrow Spencer, Billy Yazzie, John Spencer, Jack Spencer, Harry Spencer, Mitchell Spencer and Tom Spencer.
A funeral service will be Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Holbrook Stake Center, starting at 10 a.m. Viewing will be at 9 a.m. in the Relief Society Room. Burial to follow in Holbrook City Cemetery.
