POWERS, Marie

(Maiden Name: Green)

Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, AZ Friday, April 29, 2011 Marie Green Powers, 88, died Tuesday, April 12, 2011, in Flagstaff. Mrs. Powers was born Aug. 11, 1922, in Pauls Valley, Okla., to Sadie and Charles Green. One of eight children born on the family farm in Pauls Valley, Mrs. Powers took great pride in the accomplishments of her family, including her husband's service in the U.S. Army during World War II and later contributions as a civilian engineer for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory on the Apollo missions. She was also proud of her daughter for being the first family member to graduate from college and later go on to earn her Ph.D. She loved her family, animals, music and gardens and served her family tirelessly in all that she did. Her life of service included being a Girl Scout troop leader, volunteer with Meals on Wheels to service homebound HIV/AIDS patients, member of Soroptimist International and San Diego Club. Her long career in retail included work as a buyer for the children's department of Hinshaws Department Store and Sockologist at Socks for Me? in Hillcrest Community of San Diego. Her Southern wit and saucy retort brought a smile to all she met. Her love of tacos and homemade pecan pie fed the belly while her grounded Christian wisdom fed the soul. Mrs. Powers is survived by her daughter, Loretta Mayer (Cheryl Dyer) of Flagstaff; one granddaughter; brothers William Green (Donalyn) of Yuma and Marvin Green of Orlando, Fla.; sister Deborah Andrews (Donald) of Atlanta; and a large extended family located across the country. Her husband, Cletis Powers, preceded her in death in 1979. A memorial open house will be at the family home in Flagstaff on Thursday, May 5, from 3 to 6 p.m. Friends and family are welcome to stop by to celebrate Mrs. Powers' life. A family service will be Saturday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Memorial Park and Mortuary in San Diego. Because of Mrs. Powers' love for animals, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Second Change Center for Animals at 11655 N. Highway 89, Flagstaff, AZ 86004, 526-5964, www.secondchance center.org. Her family offers their thanks to the caring and wonderful staff of nurses and caregivers at The Peaks in Flagstaff who took such wonderful care of Mrs. Powers in ways her family no longer could. Condolences can be sent to her family at www.norvelowensmortuary.com. Norvel Owens Mortuary is handling arrangements.
