BULLHEAD CITY — The area had its first drowning of 2011 Thursday when attempts to rescue a 21-year-old woman failed after her car entered the Colorado River from a boat launch at Trane Road.
Police believe the drowning of Gabriela Clarice Montijo was an accident, spokeswoman Emily Montague said.
“And because of the driver’s medical history, she could possibly have had a seizure that caused her to lose control of the vehicle and drive into the river,” Montague said.
Rescuers were dispatched 8:40 a.m.; they found the 2005 Chevrolet Impala at the bottom of the river near Riverfront Drive and Park Lane.
Divers from the Bullhead City police and fire departments and the Fort Mojave Mesa Fire Department attempted to rescue Montijo, who was 8 months pregnant, but the river current was too strong.
Davis Dam reduced the amount of water released into the river, which slowed the current enough for multiple divers to pull the driver to the surface.
Montijo was taken to Western Arizona Regional Medical Center, where doctors and nurses unsuccessfully tried to revive her.
“We worked on her for 40 minutes,” hospital spokeswoman Sarah Morga said. “We pronounced her and her child deceased at 11:20.”
According to the driver’s family, Montijo had a history of seizures.
A fire department truck and a crane retrieved the vehicle from the river at about noon, Montague said.
