PURDY, Alvin

Wickenburg (AZ) Sun Thursday, September 29, 1966, p 23 Alvin Purdy, a resident of the Wickenburg community for 60 years, passed away September 22 in Community Hospital following a lingering illness. The Rev D F O'Sullivan officiated at a Requiem Mass for Mr Purdy in St Anthony's Catholic Church Saturday morning and burial followed in the Wickenburg Cemetery. In his three score years here and even more in Arizona Mr Purdy observed tremendous changes in both the community and state. Both he and Mrs Purdy who had recently celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary, were a source of reliable and colorful recollections of Wickenburg's earlier days, a factor greatly appreciated by all interested in the town's history. Born in Mason, Tex., November 5, 1881, Mr Purdy came to Phoenix in the early 1900's, worked in that city until 1906 when he moved to Wickenburg. He was employed as hoist man at the Monarch Mine, an iron and copper producer east of town and later he and Mrs Purdy, who had been married here in 1910, served as custodians of that mine. For many years he was engaged in the cattle business on a ranch on the Hassayampa River southeast of town. The ranch home gave way a few years ago to the widening of the Phoenix Highway. In more recent years, Mr Purdy was actively associated with B A Wilmoth, Phoenix surveyor, in surveying land areas in this part of the county. Mr Purdy is survived by his wife Anna; a brother Hubert Purdy of Lemon Grove, Calif; a sister Mrs Phillip Gentry of Phoenix and a granddaughter Mrs Phillip (Patricia) Horton of Fontana, Calif. Here from out of town for the funeral services of Alvin Purdy were Mr & Mrs Hubert Purdy and daughter Susan of Lemon Grove, Calif; Mr & Mrs B A Wilmoth and Mrs Inez Cadmus of Phoenix; Mrs Joe Jackson, Oakland, Calif; Mrs Vina Kellis, El Cajon, Calif; Mrs Ruth Wigley and daughter Ruth Ann and Henry O'Brien of Glendale, Ariz.
