HOOKE, Justin Lawrence


Arizona Silver Belt, Globe, AZ Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 Justin Lawrence Hooke was born on Jan. 21, 1989 in Phoenix, Ariz. to Samuel and Carol Hooke. Justin belonged to Dzililk’esilan from his mother and Bis zhahe’ from his father. For one year, Justin resided in Phoenix and then returned to San Carlos which has been his home for the past 20 years. He was raised by his Grandmother, Betty Jo Patten who also taught him to speak Apache fluently and also was given the name Joy-boy which most of the family only knew him by. Although Justin had many friends, he began to form a new special bond three years ago with his brother Steven Hooke. Justin was also fortunate to have his Great grandparents Lawrence and Alice smith to help Betty Jo raise him in a Christian home. Church was THE important factor to Justin, and attending church was his priority. While a teen he also sang with the church choir. Justin was always around the elders of his family to help with daily chores and also to accompany them while picking acorn when the season came. Justin is a 2008 graduate of Globe High school. While attending college, Justin also became involved with the San Carlos Apache Youth Council, which became recognized by the tribe, and he was elected President in Spring 2010. He was known throughout Indian Country, our state and nation. Justin was also the youngest member of the 7-Mile S.T.E.P.P Coalition and IS the youngest Apache to pass the San Carlos Apache Tribal Bar Exam! After passing the bar exam, Justin was hired on as the assistant Public Defender and most recently became the Assistant Juvenile Prosecutor for the San Carlos Apache Tribe. Justin was very active in his current church at Full Gospel Church and was the song leader. Because of his ability to understand both the church and the Apache culture, Justin was able to have stability in his life. Justin was the historian for his family and captured memories through taking pictures. Justin is preceded in his passing by his maternal grandparents Lawrence and Alice Smith, his uncle Roger “O’he” Smith, Grandma Virginia Dennis and paternal grandfather Howard Hooke, Sr. He is survived by his Grandma Betty Jo Patten, his parents Samuel and Carol Hooke, his brother Steven Hooke, a nephew Jayson Hooke and many uncles, aunties and cousins as well. Services were held May 1, 2011 at Burdette Hall in San Carlos, Ariz. Assisting the family; Lamont Mortuary of Globe.
