Dakota Lundy was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck “at a high-rate of speed” southbound on SR 95 when he collided with a GMC Sierra pickup truck pulling out onto the highway around 10:25 p.m. Thursday. Lundy then struck a traffic light pole at the intersection of SR 95 Palo Verde Boulevard North. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when Lake Havasu City Police and Fire arrived on the scene. Lundy died at the scene, according to a press release issued by the Lake Havasu City Police Department. “Why it started on fire is just due to the rate of speed and the sudden stopping into that light pole,” said James Whitt, Lake Havasu City Battalion Chief. “The gas tank did rupture. And on top of it, the light pole took so much damage that it shorted the light pole out and energized the car and the light pole.” The light pole later had to be shut down, Whitt said, because electric currents continued to run through the pole and car, preventing firefighters from extinguishing the flames. The driver and passenger of the GMC Sierra pickup truck, David Best and Trena Lough, both of Sandy, Utah, were uninjured and refused medical care, Whitt said. The Lake Havasu City Police Department’s Accident Investigation Team is continuing its investigation of the accident, according to the press release. “At this point, alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this accident,” according to the release. The Arizona Department of Transportation shut down the traffic signal because of damage from the accident, according to the release. “It is anticipated the traffic signal pole and signal control box will have to be replaced,” officials said in the release. “This work is expected to take several days.” Vehicles traveling in both directions on SR 95 will not be allowed to make left turns onto Palo Verde Boulevard North, officials said. Vehicles traveling on the east side of Palo Verde Boulevard North will be restricted to making only a right turn onto SR 95. Vehicles will be completely restricted from accessing SR 95 from the west side of Palo Verde Boulevard North. “We really want folks to be careful at the intersection,” said Sgt. Joe Harrold of the Lake Havasu City Police Department. “Especially in the next couple of days with the increase in the amount of events this weekend.” You may contact the reporter at nbruttell@havasunews.com
