Chris Gardner Johnson
January 9, 1917 - December 5, 2010
Gardner was born in Muskegon, Mich., and grew up on a farm in Manistee. He graduated from Roosevelt University in Chicago with majors in chemistry and physics. He later earned MBA and MSBA degrees from the University of Southern California.
He married Mildred Stern in 1943. They moved from Illinois to Los Angeles, where their three children, Marcia, Alice and Linda, grew up. Gardner was an engineer and scientist working on the early development of radio, then television, then computers, rounding out his career in aerospace. His interests were wide-ranging, with a workshop to match. He was a machinist, outdoorsman, photographer, author and a lover of classical music. He moved to Prescott in 1996 to enjoy retirement.
Gardner was preceded in death by his parents, Christian Johannes Johnson and Bertha Maria Gardner, and by his beloved wife, Mildred. He leaves behind his three children and their families, including grandchildren Kathleen, Genevieve, Christina, Annmarie, Chris and Margaret; and five great-grandchildren. He is lovingly remembered and missed for his kindness, his patience, his intelligence and incredible knowledge in many different fields.
His family especially thanks Karen Jones and the staff at Granite View Adult Care Home for the wonderful care he received during his last year.
There will be a memorial gathering Saturday, May 14, 2011, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Hassayampa Inn, 122 E. Gurley St., Prescott, Ariz. All who knew him are invited.
