The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 05/10/2011 Velda Ida Prein's soul left her body April 21, 2011. Her transition was a peaceful one as she was surrounded by family and music during her last weeks on earth. Velda was born April 10, 1920, in Zittau, Wis. She lived a full and enriched life including her work with child and family services and Kid Line in Tucson until she was 88 years old. Velda will be remembered for her caring spirit, optimistic attitude and sense of adventure. When she was 58 years old, she left the security of her home in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin to start a new adventure and career in Arizona. In Fond du Lac, she served as director of the Association for Retarded Citizens infant stimulation program for many years. Upon moving to Arizona, she worked as a case manager for the State of Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities. Velda moved to the White Mountains in the summer of 2009 first making her home at Mountain Village Apartments, then at Solterra. She enjoyed playing cards and visiting with the new friends she met after her move. Velda was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Meta Procknow, her sister, Viola Maschke, her husband, Carl Prein and her granddaughter, Madeline Prein. She is survived by her sons, Mark (Lori Morse) of Lakeside and Carl of Bellville, Texas; grandchildren Anna, Lena and Daniel Prein of Lakeside, nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Solterra at 5408 Arizona Highway 260 in Lakeside. A Rosary will be held at a.m. Friday, May 13, at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Show Low. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Solterra and at Hospice Compassus for the caring and compassionate care Velda received in the last weeks of her life.
