Thomas Patrick McBreen, 87, passed away on May 11, 2011, at the Northern Arizona VA Hospital in Prescott, Ariz. He was born Sept. 18, 1923, in Concord, Mass., to Henry Edward McBreen and Mary Theresa (Carty) McBreen.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Joan Barbara (Bullock) McBreen, and their five children, Timothy McBreen, Marcia Opel (Randy Brosius), Janice McBreen, Kevin McBreen (Beth Broering), and Brian McBreen (Heidi). He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Megan Opel, Patrick Opel, Connor McBreen, David Mellan, Heather Mellan, Kyle McBreen and Shannon McBreen.
His surviving siblings include Joseph McBreen of Merrimack, N.H., Elizabeth Healy of Fitchburg, Mass., and Margaret Richey of Concord, Mass. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Henry McBreen of Peabody, Mass., and John McBreen of Concord, Mass., and by his sisters, Mary Spencer of Acton, Mass., and Catherine Hartnagel of Torrance, Calif.
Tom served his country during WWII in the United States Army Air Corps, 9th Air Force, 442nd Troop Carrier Group, 306th Squadron. Tom married Joan in 1951 and in 1952 they moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where they raised their family. Tom joined the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office in 1959, retiring as a lieutenant in 1981.
In 1988, Tom and Joan moved to Dewey, Ariz., where they enjoyed their retirement.
Tom loved to travel and was proud to say he put his motor home in 49 states.
He also loved to golf, and he wanted to say that golfing in the Thursday RAZ was one of his greatest joys, and he said there wasn't a greater bunch of guys in the world.
He was a proud member of Prescott Elks Lodge #330, Prescott Antique Auto Club (past president), American Legion Post #78, and Knights of Columbus Council #8386.
He wanted to thank his family and friends for patiently listening to all of his stories, even if they had heard them many times before.
A funeral Mass with body will be conducted at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mayer Ariz., on Monday May 16, 2011, at 11 a.m. Friends may visit with Tom's family on Sunday May 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Sunrise Funeral Home at 8167 E. Highway 69 in Prescott Valley. There will also be a Celebration of Life at the Prescott Country Club on Monday afternoon after the funeral services from 12:30 to 3 p.m.
At Tom's request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any veterans' organization, St. Vincent de Paul, or the VA Hospice.
