Stephen Michael Shapiro, 69, died May 21, 2011, in Flagstaff. He was born April 26, 1942, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Harry M. and Helen Shapiro.
Mr. Shapiro received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan. His master's degree in physical education was received from Colorado State College, Greeley, Colo.
In 1966, he relocated to Flagstaff, where he received a master's degree in education from Northern Arizona University.
Mr. Shapiro worked for the Tuba City Public School System for 27 years, where he taught physical education, English and the honors program. He served as chair of the English Department, grant writer for Tuba City High School and dean of students.
He coached football, wrestling, cross country and track. He was an excellent coach who led his wrestling, cross country and track teams to several state championships.
He loved his family and took great joy in family gatherings. He enjoyed hunting and fishing in the great outdoors.
Mr. Shapiro is survived by his wife, Laraine, of Flagstaff; sons Adam (Valerie) Shapiro of Phoenix, Alexander (Karen) Shapiro of Silver Spring, Md., Ryan Shapiro of Flagstaff and Benjamin (Ashley) Shapiro of Springville, Utah; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry M. and Helen R. Shapiro; and brother Ronald M. Shapiro.
A funeral service was Monday at Norvel Owens Mortuary, with interment at Citizens Cemetery in Flagstaff.
