Jack S. Cunning, a summer resident of Flagstaff, died on May 26 in Florence Gardens. He was 80.
Mr. Cunning was born on March 30, 1931, in Barberton, Ohio. He moved to Flagstaff with his wife and sons in 1977 and was the city community development director for 15 years, from 1977 to 1992. He attended Youngstown University and Ohio State University, where he earned a master's degree in planning. He also worked as the head of the state planning department in Tennessee, then joined a private consulting firm. He was also a Marine Corps veteran and served in the Korean War.
After retirement, Mr. Cunning wintered in Rocky Point, Mexico, and Florence, living an RV lifestyle. He enjoyed reading, mountain biking, scuba and snorkeling, traveling, camping, cribbage tournaments, woodcutting, crossword puzzles, trivia and time with his family. He was also a member of the VFW and Elks.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Evelyn B. Cunning; sons William David Cunning (Christine) and Robert John Cunning; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ethel Cunning; brothers Bill, Jim and Ed Cunning; and sister Betty Cornwell.
There will be no services.
