SUTTON, William J. (Bill)

(Bill) Sutton had taken part in Memorial Day services held in the two local cemeteries. He was a veteran of World War I, was always active in the American Legion, and usually was one of the flag bearers in the military rites conducted at the cemeteries. This Memorial Day –Monday – Mr Sutton was in turn honored by his comrades in uniform as well as by the Boy Scouts whose activities he had guided for the past 20 years. The flag bearers, the firing squard, bugler, a group of Legion and VFW officers and Auxiliary members, along with a number of Scouts grouped around his gave in the Wickenburg Cemetery to pay him final tribute. It was the same kind of service Mr Sutton himself had helped conduct on many occasions. Mr Sutton was the last seen alive at 10:30 p.m. May 23 when he visited the home of Mr & Mrs Fred Coon in Reed Addition. Last Thursday evening, Mr Coon became concerned when he hadn’t seen Mr Sutton and went to the trailer of Mrs Charlie Berg near the Hassayampa Riber where Mr Sutton had been staying as caretaker while Mrs Berg visited in New York. Mr Sutton was dead. Authorities believe he died of a heart attack during his sleep the Monday night before. Burial took place the following evening in Wickenburg Cemetery, but the final rites were delayed until Memorial Day. Mr Sutton was born in Illinois November 15, 1889. He had lived in Arizona for 30 years and in Wickenburg for 29 years. His main interest was scouting and he was the Legion’s Scout chairman for more than 20 years. Surviving are a sister residing in Chicago; Mrs Mike Eldridge of Glendale, a niece; and several other nieces in the east.
