Two Are Dead & Two Are Injured As Autos Crash
One man was instantly killed, another man died en route to Community Hospital, and their wives are both in critical condition at the hospital here as the result of a head-on automobile crash at 4 p.m. Tuesday 2 miles east of Aguila on Highway 60-70.
Killed at the scene was Donald John Malay of Los Angeles who was a passenger in a 1954 Chevrolet being driven west-bound by his wife, Mary Elson Malay, 47.
Samuel Jack Sherman, 56, of Phoenix was pinned in the wreckage of his eastbound 1955 Chrysler and blow torches had to be used to free him. He died en route to the hospital. With him was his wife, Gladys H. Sherman, 59, who was driving.
The Malay car was traveling in the eastbound lane, reports Highway Patrolman W. B. Harkleroad. Mrs Sherman, driving eastward, attempted to avoid a crash by applying the car rakes and moving to the other lane, continued Harkleroad. The two cars crashed in the center of the eastbound lane. The Malay car spun around and rolled over on its top. The Sherman car also spun around and landed crosswise in the westbound lane.
Cause of the Malay car being driven in the wrong lane is under investigation, says Harkleroad.
