SMART, William

Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, AZ Thursday, June 02, 2011 William Smart, 77, of Munds Park, died May 24, 2011. He was the son of Ike and Elaine Smart, and raised in the Midwest. After completing a degree in theater from the University of Iowa, he began married life as an officer in the U.S. Army. Regardless of where he resided or what he did for a living, Mr. Smart's passion for the arts endured, and he acted, directed and wrote. He and his first wife, Allyn, lived in Japan, Hawaii and Maryland before leaving the army and moving to Spain. There he wrote novels, but after the birth of a third child he took a job with Josten's, moved the family to Germany, and forged new business for the company across Europe. Mr. Smart later lived in England, pursuing his love of theater and at times acting as a judge for an international student theater group. Retiring to Munds Park, he directed numerous plays for the Pinewood Players community theater group. Mr. Smart was generous to a fault and cared passionately about liberal causes. Most of all, he loved his children. He accepted people from all walks of life unconditionally, and always believed that theater was a life-affirming force. Mr. Smart is survived by his three children, Kirk, Robb, and Rebekah; one grandson; two brothers; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
