Horace A. (Nick) Carter II, 88, a former resident of Oracle, died in Tucson May 23, 2011.
Mr. Carter was born June 6, 1922 in Springfield, Massachusetts to Mercy Babcock and Manson H. Carter.
Mr. Carter led a very full and interesting life attending school in Scotland, Paris, Needham, Massachusetts and finishing high school in Piedmont, California. After two years at Stanford University he volunteered for the Army and was sent to the University of Michigan to learn Japanese. He served honorably in the Army in the Pacific Theater as an intelligence officer (somehow he volunteered as a paratrooper through all this and jumped into combat three times).
After the war he finished his college degree at Stanford and married his wife Jerrilee.
During the Korean Conflict he was called back to the Army and learned to speak Chinese and was stationed in Taiwan for three years helping the free Chinese build their defense capabilities. After the Korean conflict he served in the Army Reserve and retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He worked many years managing security departments for Kennecott Copper in Baltimore, Maryland and Magma Copper Company in San Manuel.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jerrilee; daughters, Julia and Margaret; and son Christopher; as well as 11 loving grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.
