The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 06/03/2011 Mary B. Chavez (Ana Maria) left this world May 29, 2011. Mary was born July 24, 1925, to Carlota and Jenaro Ballejos in St. Johns. She served as the Apache County Deputy Recorder for 16 years then was elected the Apache County Recorder and served for 16 more years. Mary belonged to the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. She was very involved in education and continued serving in the St. Johns PTA and the St. Johns School Board before having her own children. Mary was very involved at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Mary is the beloved mother of Ellen Williams, Edward B. Chavez, Frances C. Duerst (Frank), Lillian Chavez (Greg), Irene Bennett, and Mario Ballejos (Cindy). She is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Galen, Francisco, Roger, and Thomas Williams; Eddie Robert and Vincent Chavez; Allison Duerst; Gregory, Donovan, and Annika (Chavez) Navarro; 14 great-grandchildren; sister Belma Baca; brothers Antolino Ballejos and Roger Nuanez; plus a host of relatives and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Edward L. Chavez, to whom she was married for 58 years; her parents, and sisters Telesfora and Onesima. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hinkson Assisted Living, PO Box 3570, St. Johns, AZ 85936. A rosary will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, June 3, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in St. Johns. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 4, also at the church.
