Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, AZ Tuesday, June 07, 2011 Stephan Rockwell, 24, died June 4, 2011, in Dilkon. He was born Jan. 29, 1987, in Keams Canyon, to Gary C. Poleyestewa and LaBrenda K. Rockwell. He was of the Zuni White Corn, Red Streak Running into the Water People Clan born for the Hopi Bear Clan. Mr. Rockwell was a 2005 Holbrook High School graduate and lettered all four years in high school basketball. After high school he attended Northwest Indian College in Bellingham, Wash., playing basketball there as a point guard for two years. He also played basketball with the Native Boyz Basketball Team and the NABI Tournament. He enjoyed playing basketball, being with family and friends, was energetic, smart and an all around good person. Mr. Rockwell is survived by his father, Gary Poleyestewa of Shungopavi; mother LaBrenda K. Rockwell of Indian Wells; brother Angel Rockwell of Indian Wells; sister Candace Poleyestewa of Indian Wells; one nephew; paternal grandparents Peter and Joan Nuvamsa; maternal uncles Lemuel Lester, Norman Lester, Herbert Rockwell, Jr., Tayah Rockwell, Acey Rockwell, Arson Rockwell, Fred Rockwell and Myrtis Rockwell; maternal aunts Louise Begay, Marlene Lester, Shawna Rockwell and a missing aunt, Christine Lester; paternal aunts Greta Lomayestewa, Melalanie Honwytewa; and paternal uncles Gerald Honwytewa, Lionel Honwytewa, Ben Nuvamsa and Pascal Nuvamsa. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Herbert Rockwell, Sr. and Lucy Rockwell; uncle Lorenzo Lester; and maternal grandmother Mae Rose Honwytewa. A funeral service will be today at 10 a.m. (MST), at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Indian Wells. Interment to follow at the Lucy Rockwell Memorial Cemetery.
