Farrington Elwell, 88, nationally known Western artist who did much of his painting at Remuda Ranch, died in Community Hospital at 8:30 p.m. last Saturday. He was a charter member of the Desert Caballeros. One of his paintings hangs in the Desert Caballeros building and another is in the Wickenburg Elementary School. Funeral services were held in Phoenix Tuesday evening with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery there. While sketching Western animals, cowboys and Indians at a circus in Boston, Elwell met Buffalo Bill Cody who later made Elwell manager of the Cody properties in Wyoming. In 1929 Elwell started spending his summers on a ranch near Prescott and his winters at Remuda Ranch here to concentrate upon painting western scenes. He has resided in Phoenix for the past 15 years. Among the scores of books Elwell illustrated were the early editions of Zane Grey’s works. Survivors include the widow, Kathryn of Phoenix; two daughters by a previous marriage, Mrs Claude K. Rhinehart of Ashville, N. C., and Mrs Archie C. Burnett, Jr., of Rehoboth, Mass,; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
