LOY, Sherman Adelbert


Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, AZ Thursday, June 16, 2011 Sherman Adelbert Loy, 84, died May 14, 2011, in Red Rock. He was born Aug. 5, 1926, in Cornville, to Myron and Frieda (Schuerman) Loy. He was a retired rancher. Mr. Loy served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the artillery and was stationed in Korea and Germany. He was a member of the Sedona Historical Museum -- Historian, Friends of the Forest -- Site Steward, Lions International, Retired Officers Association, U.S. Army Field Artillery Association, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Camp Verde Cavalry, Sedona Saddle Club, Verde Valley Water Users, National Rifle Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars. His hobbies were Civil War and American history and woodworking. Mr. Loy is survived by daughters Debi McNiff of Austin, Texas; Kathie Loy-Gouhin of Tucson and Mary Dean of Peoria; sons William Loy of Tucson and John Loy of Tucson; sister Martha Loy; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Westcott Funeral Home is handling arrangements. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Verde Independent, Cottonwood, AZ Saturday, June 18, 2011 Sherman Adelbert Loy, of Red Rock, near Sedona, died May 14, 2011. He was the scion of two pioneer families, the Schuerman's of Red Rock and the Loy's of Cornville. He was born August 5, 1926, to Myron and Frieda (Schuerman) Loy in Cornville, AZ. Sherman spent most of his growing up years on the Schuerman Homestead on Red Rock Loop Road and he attended the Red Rock School and Clarkdale High School. He attended ASU and completed his education at the University of Omaha. He proudly served in the Army in WWII in the Philippines. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, Field Artillery, on May 21, 1951. He served in Korea, Germany and then Vietnam in '67-'68. He retired as a Major in 1970 at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and returned to his home in Red Rock in 1971. Since returning, he spent time with a variety of pursuits and volunteer activities, including ranching the family homestead. He was a dedicated volunteer with many organizations, including the Friends of the Forest, Site Steward program, the Sedona Historical Society as Historian, Lions International, and he served on the Cottonwood-Oak Creek School District #6 Board for 10 years. He is survived by his sister Martha of Red Rock, five children, Debi McNiff , Kathie Loy-Gouhin, Bill Loy, John Loy and Mary Dean; 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
