Sheila Lys Kennedy, 78, died June 14, 2011, in Williams. She was born March 17, 1933, in Williams.
Prior to World War II, she moved to Tusayan for a few years. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, she relocated to Sonoma, Calif., and lived with an Italian family while her father worked the shipyards in San Francisco building ships for the war effort. She returned to Williams shortly after World War II.
She graduated from Williams High School in 1951, where she was a cheerleader and played softball. She spent a few years in Long Island, N.Y., and lived life abroad in Central and South America. She returned to the United States in 1967 and graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1972.
She was a substitute teacher at Williams High School and obtained employment with the United States Forest Service. In 1984, she moved to Page, where she owned and operated Sheila's Dam Shop in the visitor's center at Glen Canyon Dam for 14 years. In 1998, she retired and relocated back to her roots in Williams, where she spent the remainder of her life.
She loved Williams, and loved to share Williams' deep history with anyone with an ear willing to listen and learn. Many longtime locals would frequently ask her to identify residents and locations in old historic photographs. Her greatest loves in her life besides her children were reading, music and cooking. She enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and loved all animals.
She is survived by her sister, Victoria Gates of Globe; sons John James Calley (Mary Ellen) of Williams and Griffyd Adams Calley (Bonnie Lynn) of Fort Huachuca; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Helen Kennedy.
A funeral service will be Monday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at St John's Episcopal-Lutheran Congregation Church in Williams. Burial will follow at Williams City Cemetery.
