Janis Hilliard Hollingshead died on June 17, 2011 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Prescott, Ariz. She was born August 2, 1916 in Cambridge, Mass., the daughter of Edward Knight Hilliard and Elsie (Davenport) Hilliard. She was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church. After high school Janis attended and graduated from the Philadelphia School of Occupational Therapy on June 17, 1939. She worked in the New York area and was awarded Therapist of the Year.
On July 21, 1945, she married a soldier, Francis Herbert Tichenor, Jr., and they made their home in Peoria, Ill. Janis was widowed when he was killed in an accident in the 1960s. A few years later she was reacquainted with an old friend, Dr. E.E. “Holly” Hollingshead of Lake Havasu City. They were married in 1968.
Janis was on the Bishop’s Committee as a founding member of Grace Episcopal Church in Lake Havasu City. She was active in the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) in her local parish and in the Dioceses of Arizona. She volunteered in the food bank program and also dearly loved devoting her time to preparing scrapbooks for hospice and doctors’ offices. Janis enjoyed knitting, canvas work and caring for her cat, Dinah.
In April of 1999, she was widowed. When her health declined, she moved to the Good Samaritan Society, Prescott Village, a skilled nursing facility on March 6, 2008.
In addition to her husbands, her sister, Phyllis Hilliard Mosher, predeceased her.
Survivors are her sister, Doris Hilliard Smith of Prescott, Ariz., stepson, Randy (Margery) Hollingshead of Pacifica, Calif., and niece, Anne Mosher Shears of Florissant, Mo.
Services will be at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 2000 Shepherd’s Lane, Prescott, AZ, on Thursday, June 23, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Columbarium at Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Peoria, IL.
Memorials may be designated for Good Samaritan Society, Prescott Village, C/O Employee’s Assistance Fund, 1030 Scott Dr., Prescott, AZ 86301.
The Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with final arrangements.
