STROM, Winifred May (Wynne)

(Maiden Name: Idle)

The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Thursday, June 23, 2011 Winifred May (Idle) Strom left this life on May 21, 2011, not too long after the death of her husband, John "Al" Strom in 2009, her sons Lawrence Harland Strom in 2006 and John Sven Strom in 2008. Also preceding her in death were her sister Jean Donegan in 2010 and her much beloved cat "Prewitt" in 2010. Wynne is survived by her daughter-in-law JoAnn Strom; five grandchildren, Barbara (Don) Heaton, John Charles (Chanda) Strom, Catherine (Craig) Speers, Heidi (Ken) Moon, and Wendy Jo (Derek) Lane; and 10 great-grandchildren, Megan, Maddison and Morgan Heaton, John Martin, Jacob and Corina Strom, Miranda and Tanner Speers, Julia Moon and DeLancey Lane. Survivors also include her nephews and niece, David Evans, Michael Donegan and Diane Donegan; former daughter-in-law Judith Bottorf; and Arminta Tupper, longtime companion to son Larry Strom. When asked where she was born, she would reply, "I'm an Arizona native born in Ohio (Wapakoneta)." Indeed, she was! The Idle family came to Arizona in 1927 to save her sister's life. They traveled over dirt roads, slept in primitive cabins and campgrounds by the side of the road, arriving at last in Phoenix, Ariz., in June. They were amidst orange trees, tubercular convalescent cabins along the main arteries, and sand everywhere. Her sister healed as the family moved through the years to Casa Grande, Superior, Globe-Miami, Phoenix (several times), and Yuma. Both the Idle and Strom families lived in Douglas in later years. Retirement brought Al and Wynne to Prescott to be closer to their son Larry and his family. Wynne's family would like to say "thank you" to all of her Norris Road neighbors and her dear friends who were so kind to her through the years. A service for Winifred (Wynne) will be at the First Congregational Church, 216 E. Gurley St., Prescott, Ariz., 2 p.m. Thursday, June 30. A reception will follow in the church hall. Instead of flowers, a donation to the Yavapai Humane Society, P.O. Box 12, Prescott, AZ 86302, or to a nonprofit organization is suggested. Information provided by survivors.
