Mavis E. Carter, 85, formerly of Prescott, passed away April 24, 2006, in San Diego, Calif. due to complications associated with congestive heart failure. She was born August 21, 1920, in St. Louis, Mich.
Mavis and her husband moved to Prescott in 1981 from St. Paul, Minn. and lived in the Antelope Hills area. She relocated to Chula Vista, a suburb of San Diego, in November of 2001. While in Prescott Mavis was active in several community orchestras where she played the cello. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Mavis graduated from Alma College, Alma, Michigan, in June 1941 with a degree in education. She taught elementary school in Michigan during the war years and later in Ohio during the late 1960s and early '70s. In Ohio she played the cello in the county orchestra and was the organist at a local church. Her husband, Clifford L. Carter, served in the Coast Guard during World War II and later was an executive with State Farm Insurance Company.
They were married nearly 57 years. Clifford passed away in April 2000.
Mavis is survived by a sister, Olive Mascaro of Plymouth, Michigan; three children, Carmen Russell and her husband Chris of Newark, Ohio, Cheryl Carter and her husband Mike of Holley, N.Y., and Gary and his wife Deborah of San Diego, Calif. She had seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters.
Mavis' remains were placed with her husband's at the Heritage Memorial Park in Dewey. A memorial service was held in San Diego on May 10, 2006.
