GLADNEY, Jack Emerson (Capt.)


The Prescott Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Sunday, July 23, 2006 Captain Jack Emerson Gladney, age 85, died July 20, 2006, in Dewey. He was born in Phoenix to Albert and Helen (Dodds) Gladney. Jack began his flying career in a 40 H.P. Taylor craft in 1939, while attending Phoenix Junior College. He was in the original CPT (Civilian Pilot Training) program, graduating in the first class in 1941. During WWII, Jack instructed future instructors in the War Training Service Program. Later, he flew under contract for the Air Transport Command while employed by one of the first local service airlines, Southwest Airways. Jack finished WWII as a flight instructor for RAF pilots at Falcon Field, Mesa, Arizona. On Dec. 16, 1946, Jack was employed as a First Officer and checked out as a Captain in 1947. Subsequently, he flew for Pacific Airlines, Air West and Hughes Airwest (now Republic Airlines). Jack was memorialized in Jim Dawson's 2002 book entitled "The RAF in Arizona Falcon Field 1941-1945 (Southwest Airways Flight Instructor) during WWII, when he trained members of the RAF. In 1981, Jack married Jackie, his loving wife and life companion (playmate). After retirement, Jack pursued his other interests, including fishing, carving, hunting, and skeet shooting, and he served as president of the Prescott Gun Club. In 1974 Jack built his own house in Dewey. Jack is survived by his wife, Jackie; daughters Gale Emerson of Folsom, Calif., and Rita Lucas (Jim) of Los Altos, Calif.; step-daughters Terri Sherrod (Rick) of Phoenix and Tammi Gregor (Marc) of Phoenix; step-sons Steven Shroyer (Sylvia) and Kim Shroyer (Denise); step-grandchildren Robert Rihr, Joshua Shroyer, Amelia and Alexander Shroyer, Kayla and Ted Shroyer. Memorial service in honor of Jack will take place at noon Saturday, Aug. 12, 2006, at Sunrise Funeral Home Chapel in Prescott Valley.
