Taps Sounds For Veteran
Kellis-Draper Post of the American Legion, of which he had been an active and devoted member since moving to Wickenburg a few years ago, conducted funeral services at 11 a.m. last Thursday at the Wickenburg Funeral Home for Dr. Samuel J. Broadwell. He died unexpectedly at 10 a.m. February 12.
For 30 years he managed the legion-sponsored Monterey Park, Calif., Girls Drum & Bugle Corps which returned to Wickenburg this year for the Gold Rush Days parade.
During recent months Dr. Broadwell had written a column of American Legion news for the SUN, which was of much interest not only to legion members but to the general public.
Dr. Broadwell was born in Bagdad, Calif., November 25, 1894. He grew up in Covina, Calif., and attended public schools there. He was graduated from the California Institute Technology and entered the Chemical Warfare Section of the U. S. Army during World War I.
He received his Master's Degree in Physics and Mathematics at the University of Chicago, taught physics and astronomy at the University of Southern California for eight years then returned to Cal Tech for his Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1935. He was retired from the department of health of the State of California.
He is survived by his wife Rosetta, to who he was married in 1922; a son, Walter Broadwell and daughter, Mrs Harold (Joan) Ware, both residing in the Los Angeles area. Eight grandchildren also survive
