GRADY, Charles (Ben), Jr.


The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, June 29, 2011 Charles "Ben" Grady Jr. died peacefully June 24, 2011, at the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk, N.Y. Mr. Grady was born July 19, 1921, in Orange, N.J., to Charles Grady and Laura LaForce Grady. Family life was divided between time spent in New Jersey and Skytop, Pa. He graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology and was a member of the Sigma Nu Engineering Fraternity. During World War II, he served for a short time in the U.S. Navy and, after being discharged due to asthma, he held top-secret clearance to work in ordinance design. Mr. Grady worked for a number of manufacturing firms before becoming senior engineer for the W.L. Maxson Corp. in New York City. Later, he started his own company, The Metrodynamics Corporation, which specialized in solid-state power controls. During the 1970s, Ben designed control circuitry for an electric car for the Rowan Controller Co. During his engineering years, he developed more than 100 patents. An avid skeet shooter, Ben was invited to try out for the U.S. Olympic team, but turned it down due to work and family. A daily walker for most of his life, he loved the outdoors. Ben grew a delightful and productive vegetable garden. He also enjoyed cooking, classical music, travel, golf and tennis. In 1981, Mr. Grady designed and built a solar-powered home in Lake Placid, N.Y. He belonged to the Lake Placid Club and continued to shoot skeet after retiring to Prescott, Ariz., winning awards until age 80. Predeceased by his first spouse, Ruth Von Hofe, Ben is survived by his wife, Inge Reppermund Grady of Cottonwood, Ariz.; brother Peter LaForce Grady of Mt. Pocono, Pa.; four children, C.B. III (Janice) of Denver, Colo., Sharon (Michael Marks) of Boulder, Colo., Frederick of Arlington, Va., and Michael (Carolyn Kieber) of Fredonia, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and in California, a niece, Laura (Adam Barnhart), and two nephews, Scott, and Sebastian (Laura Haney).
