The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ October 30, 1969, p. 15 ROBERT COOKE, BORN IN WICKENBURG, LOSES LIFE IN VIETNAM WAR The many friends of the Cooke family, both here and elsewhere, are saddened to learn of the death of Robert A. Cooke, killed in action in Vietnam. (Note from Wickenburg Sun: The newspaper article which follows is from the October 2 issue of the Chico, Calif. Enterprise-Record). Sec. 4 R. A. Cooke Funeral arrangements have been made for Army Spec. 4 Robert A. Cooke, the son of Mr. and Mrs. K. D. Cooke of Durham, killed in recent Vietnam action. He was born April 19, 1950 in Wickenburg, Ariz. The family returned to California and settled in Durham in 1952. He was a 1968 graduate of Durham High School. He was active in sports and student activities. During his high school years he worked at the Butte Creek Country Club. After graduation he briefly toured Europe. Upon returning he became assistant pro at the La Cumbre county Club in Santa Barbara. He entered the Army in November 1958 and arrived in Vietnam on April 19, his 19th birthday. He was assigned to the 199th Infantry Brigade as a radio operator. His platoon was northwest of Saigon on Sept. 23 when it came under enemy fire. He was killed during the encounter. Cooke is survived by his parents; a sister, Kathryn, a Chico State College student; two brothers, Laurence, stationed aboard the USS Canberta, and Michael of Concord; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Grave Sabelman of Red Bluff and Ft. Bragg; and paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H. D. Cooke, Sr. of Wickenburg, Ariz. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Brusie Funeral Chapel in Chico. The Rev. Robert L. Shell, pastor of the Cohasset Community Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Chico Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mark Montgomery, Paul Shell, Steven Abshier, Tero Walker, Bruce Nash and Robert How.
