SPENCER, Robert E. (R.E.)


The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Sunday, December 31, 2006 Robert E. "Bob" Spence, 80, of Dewey, died about 1 p.m. Dec. 5, 2006, a few hours after being admitted to Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott Valley, due to complications of pneumonia. R.E. "Bob" was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Fairbury, Ill., son of G.B. and Morie Claudon Spence. After graduating from Fairbury Township High School, he served in the U.S. Army during WWII, ending his stint stationed in Japan. After WW II he was employed by Natural Gas Pipeline Co. of America, working first in Illinois before transferring to Texas, where for many years he was Section Foreman of the Woodsboro, Texas, Station. While living in Woodsboro, Bob was elected two times to serve as mayor. After retirement in 1986, he moved to the Prescott area. Preceding him in death were his parents, brothers Bill and Gene, and sister Jane. Survivors include his brother, M.C. (Elmira) Spence of Prescott Valley; sister, Margot (Richard) Phelps of Fairbury, Ill.; nieces Mia Amick and Anita Ludwig; nephews Michael Spence, Spencer Alexander, Bob Alexander, and Mark Spence; 15 great-nieces and -nephews; and dear friends Susie and Jeff Siereveld, who lived with R.E. for several years. A Memorial Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at Granville Community Center, 5643 Granville Parkway in Prescott Valley. Part of his ashes will be scattered in his favorite Bradshaw Mountains in Arizona and part of them will be taken to Spence Cemetery, Fairbury, Ill., for a memorial to be held at a later date. R.E. "Bob loved nature, lived, his life with great, gusto, and a positive attitude, enjoyed traveling and sports. His forte was being a "helping hand" to all.
