Lawrence Paul Lemons, known to his friends and family as simply “Paul”, passed away on July 4, 2011 in Mesa, Ariz. at the age of 78.
Paul, a long time resident of Morenci and Miami, was born in Lordsburg, N.M. He was raised in the Morenci area where he graduated high school as a proud “Wildcat.”
Paul joined the Air Force after graduation and served for three years. Paul attended Eastern Arizona College, Idaho State University and Arizona State University where he received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education.
Paul was a lifelong educator; he served as a high school business teacher, district business manager, county school superintendent, principal, state administrator, and superintendent of schools during his 28 year career.
Paul was the Superintendent of Schools for the Miami School District for 18 years from 1974 to 1992.
Paul loved and always considered eastern Arizona home. Duncan, Clifton, Morenci, Safford and Miami are areas he knew well and where he is very well-known and loved.
Paul’s roots run deep and strong in eastern Arizona mining country.
Paul is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara; five children, William, Scott, Vincent, Cecily and Jody; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mabel, and his older brother, William “Bill.”
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the LDS Church at 2228 E. Brown Road in Mesa.
