Carol J. (Cobey) Schmoyer, 71, of Wickenburg, passed peacefully on July 9 in the company of her loving family and the caring staff at Wickenburg Community Hospital (WCH).
Battling lung cancer for just over a year, Schmoyer transferred back as a patient to WCH with every intention of continuing her fight alongside her husband of more than 20 years Wayne. She had taken a sabbatical from her professional consulting business, CJS & Associates LLC, a hospital executive staffing service started in 2009. She enjoyed a respected reputation as a hospital troubleshooter and had worked all over the country in the capacity of administrative special projects director for Community Health Systems, 2000-09.
Carol came to Wickenburg after renewing her romance with high school sweetheart Wayne Schmoyer, a longtime Wickenburg businessman, at a St. Joseph’s Catholic High School class reunion in Prescott in 1985.
In 1992 she took the position of WCH director of nursing. By the next year she was its chief executive officer (1993-98) and in that capacity she achieved the Top 100 Hospital Award three times, raised contributions and managed a $1 million-plus new emergency room project, developed physician specialty clinics and recruited physicians as well as working with the board to structure contracts retaining ownership of all facilities and improvements, foreseeing the event it might return to operation by the Wickenburg Community Hospital Association one day.
Carol was born March 9, 1940, in Prescott to Walter Joseph and Mittie (Akin) Cobey. She is preceded in death by her father and a brother James, who died as a child. She is survived by her mother in Prescott and brothers, Joe (Cathi), of Kirkland and John (Bobbie Jo), also of Prescott.
After high school she earned a Diploma in Nursing from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix, working as a nurse and continuing her education to achieve a Bachelor’s of Science from St. Francis College and a Master of Arts in Management from the University of Phoenix.
She worked her way up as a nurse, nurse administrator and finally a hospital administrator while raising a family in Arizona, California, Chicago, and Hawaii.
Carol is survived by sons Tom (Ginger) of Hayes, Texas; Kevin (Eva) Hayes, of Scottsdale; and daughter Kelley (Jim) Tucker of Phoenix. When she and Wayne reunited she welcomed into her family daughter Debi (JD) Killer and son Phillip Schmoyer, both of Wickenburg.
She enjoyed the graduations and continuing accomplishments of her surviving grandchildren including Lauren (Rory) Fruhling - Arizona State/water polo, of Virginia; Kate - University of Michigan/Navy nursing; TJ - Texas A&M; and Harley Hayes of Texas; Nicole Tucker - Lewis University/golf, of Phoenix; Sarah - Purdue/softball, UNLV Law, and Chase Killer - Fort Hays State University/track-cross country, both of Wickenburg; and Seane Hayes of Scottsdale.
She very much enjoyed holidays and occasions with her entire family including many beloved nieces and nephews, many who live in Arizona and make the annual Fourth of July barbecue at Grandma Mittie’s, Christmas Eve at Aunt Kelley’s house, and she and Wayne hosted Christmas breakfast.
With her mother she enjoyed video poker at the casinos as a hobby and was an avid fan of the Phoenix Suns, Arizona Diamondbacks and Arizona Cardinals. She also enjoyed golf and travel. Through her diversified career she particularly enjoyed an extended assignment at Western Arizona Regional Medical Center in Bullhead City, where she made many lasting friendships, and they had a second home.
Services were conducted at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church with guest Monsignor Van A. Wagner, Vicar General for the diocese of Tucson, uncle to the Tucker family, presiding. A reception followed at the Wickenburg BPOE Elks Lodge 2160 in celebration of her life.
Funeral arrangements were conducted by David’s Desert Chapel Funeral Home of Wickenburg.
In lieu of flowers the families ask that memorial contributions be made to Wickenburg Community Hospital, 520 Rose Lane, Wickenburg, AZ 85390, in care of the nursing department in her name.
