WHITEHURST, JR., Alan McLain (Dr.)

Arizona Republic (Phoenix AZ) Wednesday, July 13, 2011 Dr. Alan McLain Whitehurst Jr., 91, of Mesa, passed away peacefully at home July 11, 2011. The only son of Alan and Effie Whitehurst, he was born on December 4, 1919 in Greenville, NC, but moved with his parents to Prescott, Arizona when he was 3 years old. He grew up in Prescott and graduated from high school in Wickenburg. Alan was an officer and pilot in the Army Air Corp during the second World War, then returned to finish college at ASU. He left Arizona briefly to study optometry in Memphis, TN, but returned to set up his practice in Phoenix. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Zufelt Whitehurst and is survived by his wife, Shirley McClendon Whitehurst of Mesa, his son Ralph Alan Whitehurst and daughter-in-law Bonnie Colleen McBride Whitehurst of Buena Vista, VA, his step-daughter Rose Davis Hilton of Showlow, AZ, his grandson Robert Alan Whitehurst of Provo, UT, his granddaughters Sonja Miller of Flagstaff, AZ, and Michelle Whitehurst, Cassandra Whitehurst Barker, Serena Whitehurst and Shenandoah Whitehurst all of Buena Vista, VA and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, 15 July at 10am at the Cornerstone Ward Chapel, 422 E University Drive. Friends may call at the church prior to the funeral beginning at 9am. Burial will be at the Green Acres Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E Flower St., Bldg 2, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Meldrum Mortuary handled the arrangements.
