Arizona lost an old time public servant in his passing.
Gene, as he was known to his many friends moved with his family from New Mexico, to Sidela on the East Verde in 1896 at the age of 8. He had lived in and around the Mogollon Rim Country ever since he received what schooling was then available in Gisela, Ariz., and started his long and colorful career from that point. His first job was herding Angora Goats on the east Verde, next he started carrying the mail between Gisela and Camp Verde on horseback. Following that, he started in the cow business, buying the old Crown-W-Ranch in the Tonto Basin, he stayed in the cow business until the 1920's.
He then was employed by the Forest Service and the Biological Survey as a lion hunter and trapper. He finished his work as an employee of Arizona as a game ranger. Gene will probably be remembered best by his many fiends and various organizations in Arizona for his sincere service in finding lost people on and around the Mogollon Rim Country.
He was born March 4, 1888 in the New Mexico Territory near Roswell.
