Charles Nafziger, 72; Pioneer City Fireman
Funeral rites for Charles L. Nafziger, 72, a pioneer Phoenix fireman, will be at 11:15 a.m. tomorrow in A. L. Moore and Sons Mortuary, 333 W. Adams. The Rev. Joe Smith of the Central Christian Church in Mesa will officiate. Elks Lodge 335 will assist with graveside services in Greenwood Memorial Park. Friends may call at the mortuary after noon today.
Mr. Nafzinger died Tuesday in his home at Chandler where he had lived for the past two years at 355 N. Arizona Ave. Born in Danvers, Ill., he came to Arizona 60 years ago and lived in Phoenix 50 years before moving to Chandler.
HE WAS A volunteer fireman with Engine Company 1 in downtown Phoenix and later at Five Points with a chemical unit. He was given a gold medal award in 1953 for more than 30 years service as a fireman. He retired in 1954.
Mr. Nafziger was one of six Arizona firemen to receive Civil Defense training in Oakland, Calif., in 1951. In the latter part of his career, he was an assistant chief and supervisor of fire fighting instruction. He also had been a sheriff's deputy in Phoenix and a member of Elks Lodge 335.
Surviving are his wife, Esther F. Rees Nafziger; a daughter Mrs. Phyllis Thornton, and a son, Charles Jr., both of South Gate, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and five step-grandchildren.
