Alice R. Brown, 91, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011 in Lake Havasu City. Alice was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who was devoted to her family and to her faith as a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church.
She was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Rosholt, Wis., to parents Bernard and Elizabeth (Karch) Fredach. She was one of 16 children.
She met the love of her life, Wayne E. Brown and was married Nov. 26, 1942, in Las Vegas. They had been married for 57 years when Wayne passed away March 1, 2000.
They lived in Martinton, Ill., where they raised their four children.
In 1967, they moved to Lake Havasu along with three of their children, Missy, Penny, and Steve, to become early pioneers of the city. Ken, their oldest son, remained in Watseka, Ill., with his family.
Alice went to work for McCulloch Properties, Inc. (MPl), where she worked at the Lake Havasu Hotel and other McCulloch properties. For many years she baby-sat for numerous families in Havasu and is still loved and thought fondly of by her “kids”.
She also was employed at the Lake Havasu Elks Lodge for a number of years. Along with her various occupations over the years, Alice was known for her dancing feet, her sense of humor, especially with her family, and being a great cook. She knew how to stretch a dollar with the best of them.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 13 siblings, her husband, Wayne, granddaughter, Jodi (Wood) Tigert, and daughter-in-law, Janyce (Knight) Brown.
Alice is survived by her children - Kenneth (Evelyn) Brown of Watseka, Ill., Elaine “Missy” (Butch) Wood of Lake Havasu City, Penny (Richard) Bettes of Flagstaff, and Stephen (Ramona) Brown of Henderson, Nev. She is also survived by her brother, Albert Fredach (Jane) and sister, Regina Sieber; sister-in-law, Stella Fredock and brother-in-law, Al Zurawski, all from Wis.; grandchildren Tracy (Brown) (Jim) Kelch, Kelley (Brown) (Mark) Whitlock, Katie (Brown) (Joe) Ash, Matthew (Carrie) Brown, Julie (Wood){Aaron) Marshall, Aaron Wood, Ashley Wood, Ryan Bettes, Brandon (Andee) Bettes, Jordan Bettes, Colby, Chelsea, and Rachel Brown. Great grandchildren include Marcus, Kristi, Holly, and Cody Kelch, Brennen, Zach, Andrew, and Alex Whitlock, Rachel and Jay Lynn Ash, Schyler Wood and Kalen Marshall, Anthony Wood and Timothy Ayers.
A visitation and rosary will be held 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. led by deacon Patrick Toilolo. A funeral Mass will take place 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church, with Father Thomas Kawai officiating. Interment will follow at Lake Havasu Memorial Gardens.
