WAKEFIELD, Robert (Bob)


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 08/05/2011 Robert (Bob) Wakefield, 93, died July 2, 2011, from complications of a massive stroke in Florida where he lived with his daughter. He was born March 3, 1918. He will be remembered for his many accomplishments: still able to wear his 1939 Army uniform which he was very proud of, wearing it to parades and all important family functions which would not have been the same without granddaddy in his uniform. Sgt. Wakefield served proudly in the Army from 1939 to 1945. He fought in North Africa, Sicily and Italy with the Third Infantry Division. He was in four major beach landings including Anzio and also the Battle of Monte Casino. He received three Purple Hearts and the soldier's medal. Till the day he passed he saluted the flag with pride. He is survived by his daughter, June Lee; son-in-law Steve Coombe; daughter-in-law Kathy, seven grandchildren: Steve, Neal, Angie, Krissy, Jaime, Nathan and Tyler and their spouses, also by 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, June, son Tim and grandson-in-law Andrew. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Johns. Memorial services will be held there Saturday, Aug. 20, at 4 p.m.
