SMELSER, John W.


Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, AZ Monday, August 15, 2011 John W. Smelser, of Flagstaff, Arizona passed away on August 11, 2011, at age 88. He was born in Linwood, Kansas on April 1, 1923. His family moved to Northern Arizona in 1927. In 1954, John and his beloved wife Clarabelle moved to Phoenix, Arizona with their three children. John worked with the teamsters union until retirement before moving back to Flagstaff. He was actively involved as an operator with the American Radio Relay League, and loved spending time in his metal working shop. John was a devoted volunteer for the Cumbres Toltec Railroads machine shop in Chamas, New Mexico. In their younger years he and Clarabelle traveled the U.S. and parts of Canada square dancing, which they did for many years. He was a lifelong member of the NRA. He was preceeded in death by his wife of 63 years, Clarabelle Compton Smelser. His son, Kenneth Smelser, and granddaughter, Kerri Robosson Benson. John is survived by his sister, Bess Ann Fillmore, son, John Smelser Sr., daughter, Judith Robosson. Grandchildren: Thad Robosson, Mark Smelser, John Smelser II, and David Smelser. Great grandchildren : Austin Benson, Jacob Brock, Dalton Benson, Ryan Smelser, Justin Benson, and Jacie Lynn Smelser. John's vast knowledge and crazy antics will be greatly missed. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday August 16, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at Citizens Cemetery. Arrangements made through Norvel Owens Mortuary.
