Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona June 8, 1967 Mrs. Mason's Son Dies In Plane Crash Memorial services were held in the Chapel at Williams Air Force Base near Chandler at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon for Captain Alfred R. Mason, 34-year-old son of Mrs. Kathryn Mason of Wickenburg. A veteran of 121 missions over Vietnam and holder of the Silver Star, the nation's third highest award for valor, the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Capt. Mason was fatally injured when his F5 Freedom Fighter jet crashed shortly after takeoff May 31 at Ramstein Air Base, West Germany. Attending the Memorial Services from her were Mrs. Mason and her younger son Capt Jerry Mason of the U.S. Air Force who came here from his station in Tokyo, Japan, upon a receipt of word of the death of his brother. Also Mrs. Mason's sister Mrs. Leo Heiligman; her brother, Dolph Simpson and Mrs. Simpson and the Rev. Bert Follmar and Mrs. Follmar. Capt Manson's wife and four children, living in Chandler, were also at the service. Capt. Mason was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and he will be buried in the cemetery there. Since returning from Vietnam, Capt. Mason had been stationed at Williams Air Force Base. At the time of his death he was on temporary duty in Germany for the purpose of ferrying P5s from there to Italy.
