Youth Dies, Eight Hurt Near Salome
A 34-year-old California father and his seven children ranging in age from three to 13, were brought to Community Hospital last Friday night following a 2-car collision on Highway 60-70 some 3 ½ miles west of Salome. The driver of the other can involved, a Volkswagen, died in the hospital here at 12:50 a.m. Saturday of injuries received in the crash.
Admitted to the hospital were Robert Wade and his seven children, Teresa, 3; Angele, 5: John, 7; Robert Jr., 8; Karen, 10; Sandy, a girl, 12, and Debby, 13. None of their injuries were believed serious. The children were all in the back end of a 1961 Chevrolet station wagon from which the seats had been removed.
The driver of the Volkswagen was Philip B. Schwab, a member of the Class of 1969 at the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis. His home was Pacific Palisades, Calif. High patrol officers at the scene were unable to determine of Schwab was driving east or west when, during a heavy rain shower about 9 o’clock, his vehicle spun out of control and collided with the east-bound station wagon.
The Wade family had left their home in Costa Mesa, Calif., for El Paso, Tex., where the father told the highway patrol, the children are to make their home with an aunt. Wilde’s wife died two years ago and he is no longer able to provide a home for the children.
Although the accident did not occur in the Wickenburg highway patrol area, patrolmen from throughout the section were called to assist in the investigation and handling of traffic.
