Californians Killed On Yarnell Road - Woman and Man Victims in Two Weekend Crashes
Highway accidents in the Yarnell area over the past weekend claimed the lives of two Californians, a man and a woman, and brought the total of highway fatalities in the Wickenburg highway patrol district for the year to five, the record shows.
First of the fatal accidents on Yarnell Hill occurred Friday when an automobile driven by Clarence Bartholmew of Los Angeles lost its brakes just this side of Elephant Head and went out of control for a considerable distance before plunging into a drainage pit. His wife Leora died in Community Hospital here at 4:45 p.m. Sunday of her injuries. The husband and 12-year-old daughter Roberta were admitted to the hospital. They were later flown in an air ambulance to Los Angeles.
The second fatality occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. Sunday 2½ miles north of Yarnell when a motorcyclist, Stanley L. Drake, age 35, of Whittier, Calif., went around a slight curve on the wrong side of the road and crashed head on into a southbound automobile driven by Anita Culp, 18, of Bagdad, with Robert Dukes, 19, Kirkland, as passenger.
Highway Patrolman. H. Gatlin said Drake was dead when he reached the scene. The girl was admitted to Yavapai Community Hospital in Prescott. Dukes was treated and released.
