Last Rites For ‘Doc’ Marlar – Community Shocked by death of Wenden Man
Many of his friends from Wickenburg went to Wenden Thursday afternoon to join with hundreds of others from throughout West Central Arizona in paying their last respects to J. W. (Doc) Marlar, widely known and highly regarded business man of Wenden for the past 10 years. His death, which shocked those many friends, occurred last Sunday evening at the Papago Park Veterans Hospital near Phx., where he had been a patient for some time past.
Mr. Marlar had suffered from a heart ailment for many years. A few weeks ago he was afflicted with pneumonia, from which he recovered, but it is believed the disease aggravated his heart condition and led to his death.
Members of the Wenden post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars conducted a military funeral at the grave in the Wenden cemetery Thursday afternoon. The burial followed services held Tuesday evening in a Phx. Mortuary with Rev. Clyde Beecher officiating and VFW members attending.
Mr. Marlar had held the post of state commander of the VFW, the only man from this section of Arizona ever to be so honored. He was also active in the Disabled American Veterans organization. He was one of the first Arizonians to go overseas during World War I, in which he was twice wounded and gassed.
Born in Mulberry, Ark., Mr. Marlar came to Arizona 32 years ago and was in the drug store business in Phx., before locating in Wenden a decade ago. His store there contained what is said to be one of the largest and most varied collections of fire arms and relics of the Old West, in this country.
Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Marie Waits of Wenden and Mrs. Gertrude Golden of Wabash, Ark., and two brothers, Dr. William Marlar and A.H. Marlar of Alix, Ark.
Mr. Marlar was a generous contributor to the Community Hospital fund here and served as a member of the Board of Directors of the hospital during its first year under community ownership.
