Gholson, of Wickenburg, who on Monday of this week, received a telegram from the Secretary of War informing them of the death of their son, First Lieutenant Hubert L. Gholson, which occurred on May 20th in England. His death was due to acute meningitis. Mr. and Mrs. Gholson, formerly of Chandler, have been residents of Wickenburg for the past two years, operating the Gholson Auto Court here. Lieut. Gholson was graduated from Chandler High School in 1935. He attended the University of Arizona from 1936 until 1940, receiving his Master’s Degree in Chemistry. Prior to entering the Armed Forces, he was Chemist for the Pecos Valley Alfalfa Mill in Chandler. He enlisted in the Air Forces in the summer of 1942 and received training to be a weather officer at the University of California at Los Angeles, and the University of Chicago. He received his commission as Second Lieutenant from the later school in June, 1943 and was stationed at the Atlanta Army Air Base Weather Station until he was sent overseas in the early fall. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on March 9th of this year. Prior to his death he was head of a weather station “Somewhere in England.” Besides his parents, Lieut. Gholson is survived by his sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Gholson Jerels Supervisor of Music in the Globe Schools. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wickenburg SUN, Wickenburg, Arizona July 30, 1948 Final Rites for Lieut. Gholson in Mesa Today. Funeral services are to be held at 10 o’clock this morning (Friday) at the M.L. Gibbons Mortuary in Mesa for First Lieutenant Hubert Lynn Gholson, son of Mrs. Ellen M Gholson and the late B. O. Gholson and brother of Mrs. Elizabeth Jeries of Wickenburg. Lieut. Gholson died May 20, 1944, while stationed with American troops at North Pickenham, England, and he was buried in the American Military Cemetery at Cambridge, England. His death was due to spinal meningitis. Rev. Charles A. Surber of the First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg will conduct the funeral services in Mesa today. Burial will take place in the Mesa Cemetery. Pallbearers will include Harold Nervick and John Wright, both of Wickenburg. Born in Beiot, Kan., Apr 23, 1913, Lieut. Ghoson attended schools in California and Mesa and was graduated from Chandler High school in 1935 where he was active in many organization and attained high scholarship honors. He attended the University of Arizona where he majored in chemistry, receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1939 and his Master’s Degree the following year. After graduation, he was employed as a chemist by several concerns. Enlisting in the Air Corps from Chandler in 1942, he received training in meteorology at several points before being commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in June, 1943. He was sent to England in the fall of that year where he served as weather officer at various bases. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on March 9, 1944.
