The Verde Independent, Cottonwood, AZ Tuesday, August 23, 2011 Margaret Lee Powers McCann, age 86, died on August 14, 2011. Margaret was born, March 23, 1925 in New York, NY. Margaret graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Cleveland, Ohio. After her marriage to Thomas McCann of Sharon, Pennsylvania on November 28, 1946 they lived in several places including Pennsylvania and New Jersey before moving to Binghamton, New York where they lived for 25 years. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Catholic Schools Office. They retired to Greeneville, Tennessee where they lived for twenty years. In retirement Margaret volunteered for the Knoxville Diocesan Library and also for a children’s literacy program for at risk readers. She also served as a cantor at Notre Dame Catholic Church. Upon Thomas’s passing, Margaret moved to Arizona and resided in Cottonwood until her death. Margaret was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and their seniors group. Margaret was an avid reader, stamp collector and enjoyed music, dancing, and traveling. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas McCann; her parents, Leonie and Joseph Powers. She is survived by her children, Margaret (Dennis) Slowey of Cottonwood AZ, Leonie (James) DeRoche of Alexandria, VA, Jane (Richard) Hicks of Staunton, VA, Thomas (Joan) McCann of Owego. NY, Michael McCann of Binghamton, NY, Joseph (Michele) McCann of Owego, N.Y. She is survived by her brothers, Joseph and Richard (Sue) Powers and her sister, Antoinette King; 19 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held Saturday Aug. 27, 2011, 9 a.m., at Notre Dame Catholic Church, Greeneville, TN. Margaret will be interned with Thomas at Andrew Johnson National Cemetery, Greeneville, TN. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Verde Valley Community Hospice, 859 Cove Parkway suite # 103 Cottonwood, AZ 86326. Information provided by survivors.
