The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Tuesday, August 23, 2011 Jack Robert Mathews Feb. 11, 1931 - Aug 2, 2011 Jack Robert Mathews completed his life journey Aug. 2, 2011. He was 80. He was the son of Benjamin and Esther Mathews. After a year at Arizona State College in Flagstaff, the Naval reservist was called to active duty with the outbreak of the Korean War. After the Navy, he resumed his education at New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, earning a B.S. in agriculture. He then worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Prescott, Ariz., where he met and married Ann Gorman. His career took him to New Mexico, California and Klamath Falls, Ore., where they raised their three children. Ann passed away in 1984. Jack later married Janet Derrah. He and Janet loved to travel, living briefly in Mexico before settling in Las Vegas, Nev., to resume their education. He earned an M.A. in anthropology from UNLV. The couple moved to Las Cruces, N.M., where they volunteered for archaeological field work for various agencies. In 2008, he published a book, "Homeland Security: Cowboy Justice," a political thriller. Jack was an adventurer, admired for his sense of humor and his common sense. Jack will be missed by his beloved wife of 25 years, Janet Mathews; brother Craig Mathews of Pueblo, Colo.; sister Mary Jinneman of Wenatchee, Wash.; sister Vivian Hines of Prescott; his children, Karen Mansker of Sisters, Ore., Gail Harris of Forest Grove, Ore., and Stuart Mathews of Portland, Ore.; three stepchildren; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his brother Norman Mathews of Prescott. Celebration of Life Cremation Services, Colorado Springs, Colo., assisted the family. Information provided by survivors.
