Friends Mourn Death of Orval Shride – Pioneer Businessman Summoned Monday at Hospital Here
Sorrowing friends gathered at the Wickenburg Chapel Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock to pay their last respects to Orval Shride, pioneer Wickenburg businessman and resident of Arizona, who passed away early last Monday morning at Community Hospital here. Mrs. Shride had not been in good health for many years but had shown some improvement recently and the suddenness of his death came as a shock to the family and friends.
Dr. Charles S. Poling, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiated at the funeral services and members of Hassayampa Lodge conducted the graveside services. Burial was in the Wickenburg Cemetery.
Native of Illinois
Born in Illinois March 8, 1886, Mr. Shride came to Arizona in 1905 and for many years operated a livery business in Prescott and in other mining camps in that vicinity. In 1928 he moved to Wickenburg, purchasing the Wickenburg Ice Company. Ill health forced him to retire from active participation in the concern 15 years ago at which time his only son, Carl, took over the management.
Mr. Shride is survived by the son, two brothers, Earl Shride of Congress and Dr. Lloyd Shride of Inglewood, Calif., and three sisters, Mrs. Grace Abernathy, Mrs. Velma Van Arsdale, and Mrs. Easter Butterfield, also of Inglewood. Two grandchildren survive, Betty and Billy Shride of Wickenburg. The first Mrs. Shride died in 1929. He later married Dorothy Conway, who passed away in 1949.
Mr. Shride was a member of the Masonic Lodge here and of the Shrine in Fort Worth, Tex.
