Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona June 13, 1952 Mrs. Burden is Laid to Rest After Funeral Rites Sunday Afternoon. She Passed Away Friday at age of 78 Funeral services were conducted by Dr. Charles S. Poling, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, in the Wickenburg Chapel at 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon for Mrs. Ellen Kate Burden. The well known and respected Wickenburg resident died in Community Hospital at 6:15 o’clock last Friday morning. She had been in failing health since last December. Mrs. Burden was born April 2, 1874, in Newton, Mass., the daughter of James Watts Robinson, a West Point graduate and aide to Gen. Robert E. Lee during the Civil War. She was married in 1898 to Dr. Ernest D. Burden of Boston, a graduate of the Harvard Medical School. He passed away in that city 12 years ago. In 1925 Mrs. Burden came to Wickenburg with her late son, Jack Burden, as guests at the old Bar FX Ranch. When the son established Remuda Ranch in 1925, his mother became the senior hostess, a position she held until eight years ago. The son died in 1943. Six years ago Mrs. Burden became volunteer librarian of the Wickenburg Library and for four years devoted her time to helping build it up. Two years ago, when the position was placed on a full time basis, Mrs. Burden was the Library Board’s choice for the position. When her health began to fail, she retired last December to be succeeded by her daughter, Mrs. Kate Burden Pearson. She founded the Animal Rescue League her two years ago and was the guiding force in raising the funds for the construction of an animal pound. While an Episcopalian, Mrs. Burden attended the Presbyterian Church her and was a member of the Ladies Aid. Surviving are the one daughter, Mrs. Pearson, and four grandchildren, Robert F. Pearson of March Field, Calif., Mrs. D. Echeverria and John Burden of Ft. Collins, and Dana Burden of Wickenburg. There are two great grandchildren, Elaine and John Dana Echeverria, children of Mr. and Mrs.Dom Echeverria. Pallbearers at the funeral were Russell E. Stone, Kenneth Everett, Dallas Gant, Don Kerr, H.D. Cooke, Sr., and Bob Sullivan.
